¿WHY WASHOE?

We put our name in honor to Washoe, the first non human primate, female chimpazee, to learn American Sign Language in the year 1966. She had learned a human language to be able to communicate with us humans. Thanks to Wahsoe one of the most amazing human discoveries was made: the communication with other great apes with a human symbolic language.

Among the great apes, there are Humans, Bonobos, Chimpanzees, Gorillas and Orangutans. As non-human great apes share 98% DNA code with humans, they are sadly used in great number to make biochemical experiments, and not in great number to find more possitive similarities like for example respect for their beings and habitats.

We still have big issues trying to communicate between us humans only, but everything is possible, even more, as Washoe shows. That is why we put our name in honor to Washoe and the power of adaptation so as the Sender´s message gets the best possible to the Receiver, and in addition to this, we want to create consiousness and lead to prevention in non human great apes and other non human animal treatment.

After Washoe, other great apes followed her: Kanzi, a male Bonobo, Koko, a female Gorilla, Chantek, a male Orangutan, and many others. They communicate with human beings using American Sign Language and Lexigrams, and they transmitted that language knowledge to other members of their species. In addition to the skills of communication in a symbolic language, all of them show consiousness and self awareness, abstract thinking and emotions. They are sentient beings.
